Hi Strong North Tahoe Member,

Thank you to everyone who read, asked questions, attended Tuesday’s NTPUD meeting, or otherwise joined the conversation this week.
|
A quick update: Yesterday, AB 2679, the California safe recreation access bill we’ve been following, was held in the Senate Appropriations Committee and did not advance.
|
Earlier in the week, the North Tahoe Public Utility District Board also voted to direct staff to prepare an Oppose Unless Amended letter for AB 2679. The discussion raised concerns about Route 267, Tahoe-generated revenue, peak-demand management, carrying capacity, and the need for a broader regional approach.
|

What stayed with me most is that the conversation did not stop with one bill.
|
At Tuesday’s meeting, I found myself asking a question I think is worth carrying beyond NTPUD:
|
- What is North Tahoe actually being asked to carry, who knows that today, and how can each agency contribute what it knows, while also getting the information it needs to do its own job better?
That matters because the cost of getting the picture wrong is real. If we do not understand the actual demand, we risk underfunding systems, misplacing infrastructure, shifting costs, or solving one problem while creating another for the communities around it.

So maybe the larger questions are:

- Are California and the agencies making decisions for Tahoe working from an accurate enough picture of the demand our communities actually carry?
- And looking ahead, what are the first steps residents, local agencies, and state decision-makers can each take to help build a more accurate picture of that reality?
That is a conversation I hope we can keep building across transportation, energy, infrastructure, funding, and other decisions that affect life here.

Count the demand. Plan for the reality.

AB 2679 did not advance, but the questions raised here in North Tahoe are still very much alive. This gives us a chance to keep the conversation going before the next major proposal, project, or investment decision arrives.
|
And looking ahead, a few local groups are talking about a possible e-bike ride and demonstration around the Tahoe Summit this Wednesday, August 19. I’m still learning more and will share details as they come together.
