Let’s Make Sure North Tahoe Benefits from Our Property Taxes
Did you know that the Truckee Tahoe Airport receives nearly $6 million a year from property taxes paid by North Tahoe residents in Placer County? (2024 budget)
This money is collected automatically as part of our property taxes, but many of us aren’t aware it’s going to the airport. This isn’t shown as a separate line item, so it can be easy to miss.
Currently, most of the airport’s benefits go toward supporting private aviation, which not many of us use. At Strong North Tahoe, we believe there’s a way to make the airport a bigger part of our community by investing more in things that would help everyone.
What’s Missing?
The airport has a Community Benefit Program, but North Tahoe residents haven’t seen much impact yet from these funds. If our tax dollars are going to support the airport, we’d like to see more projects that serve our broader community needs, like improving transportation, affordable housing, and educational opportunities.
A Positive Opportunity
The good news? Airport leaders recently shared that they’re open to funding “shovel-ready” projects, especially those focused on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education. This could be a great chance to develop programs that support our local students and create positive community connections.
Why Your Voice Matters Now
There’s an important election coming up in November with three open seats on the Airport Board and six candidates running. This is our opportunity to elect leaders who will ensure that our community’s needs are part of the conversation.
If you want to see your tax dollars used in a way that benefits all of North Tahoe, get involved, ask questions, and vote! Let’s work together to create a more balanced use of airport resources for the future.
