Our Origin Story
The Spark:
In early 2024, a group of dedicated community members from the North Tahoe Business Association’s Economic Vitality Committee decided it was time for a change. Frustrated by a lack of transparency in local planning and a desire for community-led redevelopments, they founded Strong North Tahoe – a Strong Towns Local Conversation group.
Driven by a commitment to ensure that community voices are heard, these founders—experts about their community, just like you—aimed to advocate for community building and revitalization that truly benefits North Tahoe and works with our natural environment.
The Catalyst:
Frustration peaked with numerous project efforts that lacked public input and did not reflect the Tahoe Basin Area Plan and the Kings Beach Vision Plan, documents that represent bottom-up community planning and visioning. This departure from community-led priorities galvanized the founders to create an organization that would champion incremental solutions to local challenges and build resilience in our communities.
Our Mission:
Strong North Tahoe was established to make our community not just a place to live, but a place to thrive. Our mission is to empower the local community, foster local stewardship through local business and property ownership, and ensure that residents have a significant say in the priority investments and policies that shape our environment.
Engagement and Milestones:
Our first major initiative was the “Strong North Tahoe Forum – Community Dialogue with Supervisor Cindy Gustafson.” This event marked a significant step in our journey, fostering an open dialogue about local issues and paving the way for future advocacy. We continue to engage the community through various forums, advocating for transparency and appropriate development at local and regional levels.
Looking Ahead:
With plans to host educational mixers and advocate for smaller-scale redevelopment, we are excited about our path forward. Our focus remains on empowering our community and influencing local development to reflect the true needs and desires of its residents.
