SFGATE: Kings Beach is Tahoe’s last working class enclave, and locals are fighting for its future

Kings Beach, Tahoe’s last working-class town, is at a turning point. Local businesses might soon be torn down to make room for a new town center. This new development, planned by Kingsbarn Capital & Development, includes a big hotel and several townhouses. While the project aims to bring new energy to the area, many residents feel it’s too big and doesn’t fit the community’s needs.

In a recent SFGATE article, Julie Brown Davis explores how this proposed development will affect the people and businesses of Kings Beach. Velia Estrella, a long-time salon owner, and other local residents share their worries about being forced to move and the uncertain future of their town.

One major concern is that the proposed development has virtually no “mixed-use” elements. It’s almost entirely a hotel and townhomes right in the center of town, eliminating the original vision for around 40,000 square feet of commercial and retail space. This change makes the project less beneficial for local residents who rely on these services and shops.

At Strong North Tahoe, we believe in small, community-focused projects. We think development should prioritize the needs of residents over tourists.

I lived on No. Shore Tahoe for 30 years. I haven’t been back to Kings. Beach since the tragic end to my fiancés life. But, I had many friends who had made that little, friendly enclave their home for decades. To hear that developers are coming in will Ruin the small town feel, the love of community.
It seems wherever we go now Greed takes up our spaces and because we all cannot afford a million/ billionaires way of life, is no reason to kick human beings to the curb!
I lived in Tahoe City from 1972, then Kings Beach 1998. I worked for the Tahoe World newspaper, ski areas, graphic studios and many, many more places. I thought there were Moratoriums on building, but it sounds like Money spoke more than humans, a fact we see more and more these days.
I’m sorry to hear No. Shore has fallen victim to Outsiders who have No Idea about the Humanity that exists there.
